Solid red-brown squares indicate Avian chromosomes that were maintained as a single synteny block (either as a single chromosome or attached to another Avian ancestor chromosome), with shades of the colour indicating the fraction of the chromosome affected by intrachromosomal rearrangements (lightest shade is most affected). Split blocks demarcate Avian chromosomes that were affected by interchromosomal rearrangements. Upper triangles show the fraction of the chromosome affected by additional intrachromosomal rearrangements and lower triangles the fraction affected by interchromosomal changes. Acronyms for names of reconstructed ancestors correspond to their full names as shown in Table 1
