The relative abundance of microbial a gene groups and b taxonomic genus between different niches. The sampled niches included the rhizosphere of chickpea (CP) and wheat (WH) growing under + and − decaying root (DR), bulk soil (BS) sampled from the unplanted control in −DR and detritusphere soil (DS) sampled from the soil surrounding the decaying root from unplanted control in +DR. Only the groups/genus with top average relative abundance, and significantly influenced by niches (P value adjusted by Benjamini-Hochberg FDR < 0.05), are presented here. The mean values and standard error in the heatmap are presented in Additional file 2 Table S8 and Table S9
