Inverse relationship between breadth of promoter activity and complexity of transcriptional regulation. We quantified the breadth of promoter activity over different cell types by Shannon entropy. Promoters were divided into bins according to the number of enhancers included in their optimally reduced models and the distribution of Shannon entropy was calculated for each bin (the number of promoters assigned to each bin is indicated in parentheses). A marked inverse relationship is observed. The results shown here are based on ENCODE DHS data (see Additional file 1: Figure S12 for the same analysis applied to FANTOM5 CAGE data)
