The stage-wise testing paradigm. n g hypotheses are of interest for gene g. In the screening stage, evidence across the hypotheses is aggregated, and an omnibus test is performed that controls the FDR across all genes. Genes significant in the screening stage proceed to the confirmation stage, where every hypothesis is assessed separately, and the FWER within a gene is controlled at the adjusted significance level from the screening stage
