Characteristics of heteroplasmies. a The minor allele fraction of the detected heteroplasmies (heteroplasmy level). Most positions are detected close to the detection threshold of 15 %. b The number of heteroplasmies plotted against the mean coverage for each analyzed individual. There is a minor correlation in the data (Pearson’s r = 0.17), however there is essentially no correlation for individuals with a mean coverage of more than 40 (Pearson’s r = 0.05). c The mutational spectrum of the heteroplasmies detected is similar to the spectrum of mutations reported in MITOMAP (X 2 p = 0.07). d The genomic location of heteroplasmies is strongly biased and significantly different to the repartition of mtDNA elements
