The graphs were drawn such that the mean distance between tissues in a species exceeds the interspecies distance between homologous tissues by roughly the observed ratio for a human–macaque comparison (bottom), a human–mouse comparison (middle), or a human–chicken comparison (top), and to agree with the result above that relative tissue differences tend to be conserved across species
