Shown are Alu content in flanking regions of human genes (20 kilobases) and difference in breadth of expression in human-mouse orthologous genes. 'Higher' refers to the top 20% of human genes with expression in a higher number of tissues than their mouse counterparts; 'Unchanged' includes the middle 20% of genes in the distribution; and 'Lower' refers to the 20% of genes with lowest breadth of expression with respect to their mouse orthologs.
