Sequence conservation at the P. falciparum TSS. (a) Nucleotide frequencies in the region from -100 to +50 nucleotides around 3,546 P. falciparum TSSs. (b) The frequency of each position in the 150 nucleotides around aligned TSS was calculated to generate a position specific scoring matrix. The information content of each position in the matrix was calculated by Σ i (p i * log2(p i /b i )), where p i = frequency of nucleotide i at that position and b i = background frequency of i. Background frequencies were calculated from P. falciparum intergenic DNA (b A = 0.42, b T = 0.45, b G = 0.07, b C = 0.06).
