Table 7 Effect of Hfe disruption on plasma lipid profiles

From: Gene expression profiling of Hfe-/-liver and duodenum in mouse strains with differing susceptibilities to iron loading: identification of transcriptional regulatory targets of Hfe and potential hemochromatosis modifiers

  C57BL/6 strain DBA/2 strain
  Hfe -/- Hfe +/+ P Hfe -/- Hfe +/+ P
Total cholesterol (mg/ml) 0.93 ± 0.24 1.07 ± 0.05 0.28 1.46 ± 0.25 1.17 ± 0.13 0.04
HDL-cholesterol (mg/ml) 0.71 ± 0.18 0.86 ± 0.05 0.16 1.14 ± 0.11 0.97 ± 0.08 0.02
  1. Hfe-/- and Hfe+/+ mice (five males per group) were killed at age 7 weeks. Blood was removed and plasma lipid levels were determined by chromatography. Results are expressed as mean ± standard deviation in each group. P values for comparisons of plasma lipid levels between Hfe-/- and Hfe+/+ mice of each strain were obtained by Student's t-test. HDL, high-density lipoprotein.
