The day of the genome

A semblance of peace is being restored to the human genome sequencing race as a joint announcement is planned for the coming week. Accounts have varied, with the most explicit communication, announcing a press conference on Monday June 26, coming from the UK-based Sanger Center. The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday that a joint announcement would be made by Celera Genomics and the Human Genome Project next Monday at the White House, but a White House spokesman later denied the report. Although the exact day of the announcement is still unknown, the coordination between the two groups seems all but certain. For the Human Genome Project this would avert any danger of appearing to be trumped, and for Celera it would help to placate a scientific community that makes up a significant part of its customer base.
